Drupal on the Bayou

on December 9, 2011 - 4:51pm

Drupal on the Bayou has come to a close, and it was a fun couple of days. This was the smallest Drupal event I've been to, but every dynamic has it's advantages. Maybe it's my own personal perception, but I felt as if the small size made everyone much more approachable. Everything was a bit more relaxed and informal, but that made it feel that much more cozy. I met some great folks from the New Orleans area and elsewhere, and learned quite a lot. Here's my recap...

An Inside Look at the Omega Theme

on December 6, 2011 - 10:26pm

When people say "mobile first" in referring to web design & theming, it's not just a mentality or something people say in a "the way it ought to be" sort of sense. They literally mean, designing the mobile theme first, then adding on CSS for tablets, desktop, and wide desktop themes. In a technical sense, it means that the global.css that contains the basic design elements of the site is loaded no matter what device you are using to view the website. Then, CSS3 Media queries determine what the size of the window is and additional stylesheets will be tacked on; either "narrow", "normal" , or "wide" - depending on the width of the device. The Omega Theme comes with built in CSS media queries that determine when to load specific stylesheets.

Drupal, One of the Many Things I'm Thankful for

on November 23, 2011 - 3:51pm

It's the time of year to sit back and reflect on the many things there are to be thankful about. God, family, friends, good food to eat, and Drupal. Yep, this year a CMS is on my list!

Not only is Drupal a fabulous content management system to build websites on, it's also changed the course of my life. It's provided me a way to do something I love, work remotely at home (and move to Florida!), and meet a lot of fantastic, giving, and intelligent people along the way. And I'm not ashamed to say that it also provides some excellent job security. And in times like these, that's nothing to shake a turkey leg at.

Natural Soaps, Handmade Tiles, & Pianos on Bicycles

on April 9, 2011 - 1:28pm

This spring has been a whirlwind of activity for me. I've been hard at work on a handful of freelance projects, which were all very different but equally interesting and enjoyable!

I began work on Dragonfly Artisan Soaps late last year when I met Colleen Bulla, a local artisan. She was beginning to craft various kinds of handmade original soaps, and needed a logo, packaging identity, and a website! While the website is not yet underway, the logo and the product packaging concept are nearing completion. Check out the Dragonfly Artisan Soaps Logo.

Around the same time, I also started working

DrupalCon Chicago FTW

on April 6, 2011 - 10:41am

This year, DrupalCon was hosted in Chicago, which isn't quite as warm as San Francisco, but was still an exciting place to be. About 3,000 Drupaler's took over the Sheraton hotel for a week. It was a bustle of activity, a frenzy of learning, and more business cards, literature, and stickers than I knew what to do with!

Between the core conversations, presentations, keynotes, and general networking, there were countless opportunities to learn about the many aspects of Drupal; from front-end development, coding, theming, and mobile Drupal development, to usability, accessibility, and search engine optimization (SEO).

Transparent .PNG Image Frame Using CSS Only

on February 17, 2011 - 5:22pm

Recently while working on a Drupal Gardens site, I wanted to know how hard it would be to do a transparent .png overlay on top of the slideshow module. Just something to give it a softer, framed look. As I searched for ways to do this, I came across several javascript and jquery solutions, but I wondered if there was a simpler way, using CSS only. Using only the developer tools on my browser and the "Advanced" tab in the Drupal Gardens Appearance editor, I starting working some magic, and it turned out to be easier than I thought.

To have a transparent image "frame" on top of your slideshow,

Celebrating the arrival of Drupal 7

on January 17, 2011 - 3:18pm

Recently I celebrated the release of Drupal 7 in Jackson, MI, in the company of the Commerce Guys and a few other developers, designers, and drupalgangers. Rubbing elbows with fellow Drupal-lovers is always a good time, especially when you're celebrating something as exciting as the release of Drupal 7.

It's been a long time coming now, with rumors of it's release beginning as early as April 2010. The date was continually bumped back as various issues were discovered, but the community kept hammering away until it was considered stable, reliable, and did I mention awesome?

So what's so great

Site Redesign... Finally!

on December 28, 2010 - 10:19pm

It's like the old saying "The cobbler's children have no shoes" - and web designers never have time to work on their own site. But it's about time I got around to it, and Drupal Gardens made it easy. Layered on the newest release, Drupal 7, Drupal Gardens was pretty great to work with..

As a web designer, it also allows me to build better sites faster and more efficiently for others, which is why I'll be hosting most new sites on Drupal Gardens.

Find out more about why Drupal is so great!

Drupalcon 2011, Chicago Style

on December 28, 2010 - 10:16pm

I'm attending DrupalCon Chicago, March 7-10, 2011

I'm uber-pumped for Drupalcon this year! They are taking over an entire hotel in Chicago. The best part? If I register before 2011, I get free Drupalcon pajama pants. Score.

The only problem is, which sessions do I want to attend?
